Arizona’s drug and alcohol addiction epidemic keeps exacerbating every year. The most widely abused substances in Arizona are heroin, opioids, marijuana, alcohol, and methamphetamine. In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in substance abuse and drug overdose deaths in the state.

The following statistics show how prevalent substance abuse is in Arizona

  • In a single-day count in March 2019, 42.9% of people in Arizona enrolled in substance abuse or addiction treatment received rehabilitative services for a drug problem only. Around 16.3% of the enrolled individuals received treatment for alcohol abuse, and 40.9% received treatment for both alcohol and drug abuse.
  • About 10,476 people in Arizona received methadone in opioid addiction treatment as a part of their rehab in a single-day count in March 2019, a 30% increase from 7,107 people in 2015.
  • About 79,399 people in Arizona got enrolled in substance abuse or addiction treatment in a single-day count in March 2019, compared to 33,978 people in 2015.
  • In Arizona, the annual prevalence of past-year substance abuse was 6.8% from 2017 to 2019, lower than the regional average of 8.1% but close to the national average of 7.4%.
