Understanding Fentanyl Addiction
What is Fentanyl Addiction?
What Causes Fentanyl Addiction?
The Symptoms of Fentanyl Addiction
According to the DSM-5, fentanyl addiction is considered a form of Opioid Use Disorder. Fentanyl addiction happens when someone loses control over their use of fentanyl. While it’s often prescribed for managing severe pain, fentanyl’s quick effects and intense euphoria make it highly addictive.
Fentanyl addiction can result from a combination of genetics, environment, and mental health factors. A family history of addiction can increase the risk, as can easy access to fentanyl or being in environments where drug use is normalized.
Mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, or PTSD may drive someone to misuse fentanyl as a way to cope. The drug’s powerful effect on the brain’s reward system can make addiction develop quickly, leading to tolerance and dependence.
Fentanyl addiction affects every part of a person’s life, from their physical health to their behaviors and emotional well-being.
Physical Symptoms: pinpoint pupils, extreme drowsiness, slow, shallow breathing, nausea, vomiting, and constipation, persistent itching or scratching, withdrawal symptoms like muscle aches, chills, sweating, or diarrhea.
Behavioral Symptoms: taking more fentanyl than prescribed or for longer periods, Failing to quit despite wanting to stop, spending excessive time getting, using, or recovering from fentanyl, ignoring work, school, or family responsibilities, and using fentanyl in risky situations, such as while driving
Psychological Symptoms: strong cravings for fentanyl, preoccupation with obtaining and using the drug, needing higher doses to feel the same effects (tolerance), experiencing withdrawal symptoms when stopping use
