The American Society of Addiction Medicine defines addiction as a “primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry.” As with other diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, the causes are a combination of genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors.

Statistics on Addiction in America

Statistics on Addiction in Teens

By the time they are seniors in high school, almost 70 percent of American teens will have tried alcohol; half will have taken an illegal drug; and more than 20 percent will have used a prescription drug for a nonmedical purpose. (The National Institute on Drug Abuse)

Young people ages 12 to 20 consume about one-tenth of all alcohol consumed in the United States. (CDC)

More than 65 million Americans report binge drinking in the past month, which is more than 40 percent of the total of current alcohol users. (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration)

More than 45 percent of adult women report drinking alcohol in the last month, and 12 percent of these report binge drinking. (CDC)

Nearly 60 percent of adult men report drinking in the last month; 23 percent of these report binge drinking five times per month (eight drinks per binge, on average. (CDC)

Statistics on Heroin and Other Opioids Use and Addiction

Among the more than 70,200 drug overdose deaths estimated in 2017, the sharpest increase occurred among deaths related to fentanyl and fentanyl analogs (other synthetic narcotics), with more than 28,400 overdose deaths.

Statistics on Methamphetamine Use and Addiction

Approximately 1.6 million people (0.6 percent of the population) report using methamphetamine in the past year, and 774,000 (0.3 percent) reported using it in the past month. (2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health) The average age of new methamphetamine users in 2016 was 23.3 years old. (2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health) More than 70 percent of local law enforcement agencies from the Pacific and West-Central regions of the U.S. report methamphetamine as the greatest drug threat in their area. (The National Institute on Drug Abuse) Treatment admissions for methamphetamine as the primary substance of use were less than 1 percent in sites east of the Mississippi River, but ranged from 12-29 percent in the sites west of the Mississippi. (The National Institute on Drug Abuse) About 15 percent of all drug overdose deaths in 2017 involved the methamphetamine category. Statistics on Cocaine Use and Addiction

North America accounts for more than 40 percent of global cocaine consumption. (United Nations World Drug Report) Use of both powder and crack cocaine continues to grow in the United States. About 1.9 million people age 12 or older were current cocaine users (meaning they had used the drug within the past month) in 2016; this estimate includes 432,000 current users of crack. (Drug Enforcement Agency) About one in three drug abuse-related emergency department visits involves cocaine.  (The National Institute on Drug Abuse) In 2017, drug overdose deaths involving cocaine increased by more than 34 percent, with almost 14,000 Americans dying from an overdose involving cocaine. Statistics on Marijuana Use and Addiction

13 percent of nighttime-weekend drivers have marijuana in their system. (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) In 2016, around 24 million Americans aged 12 or older, or 9% percent of the population, were current users of marijuana. (CDC) In 2018, marijuana use among U.S. college students reached a 35-year high — 43% of full-time college students ages 19-22 reported using marijuana at least once in the prior 12 months, and 25 percent reported using at least once in the prior 30 days. (University of Michigan’s annual national Monitoring the Future Panel Study) 30 percent of those who use marijuana may be addicted to it. (The National Institute on Drug Abuse) Researchers estimate that 4 million people in the United States are addicted to marijuana. (The National Institute on Drug Abuse) In 2015, 138,000 people voluntarily sought treatment for marijuana treatment. (The National Institute on Drug Abuse)
