What types of behavioral mental health programs does Aetna cover?

Aetna health insurance recognizes the essential nature of mental health care and typically covers a diverse range of treatment services. Under the Affordable Care Act, plans must offer behavioral health treatment coverage.3 While specific coverage may vary by policy and location, Aetna plans generally include:

  • Residential Care: Intensive treatment within residential mental health facilities.
  • Outpatient Services: Regular sessions with behavioral health practitioners, excluding overnight stays.
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP): Frequent therapy sessions for serious mental health conditions, without full hospitalization.
  • Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP): Daytime, intensive therapy programs that operate multiple days per week.
  • Group Therapy: Therapist-led sessions in a group setting for shared healing experiences.

  • Telehealth Services: Coverage for remote therapy and consultations.

For more detailed information on your coverage, consult your Aetna policy or contact Aetna directly.

Will Aetna cover my residential treatment stay?

Aetna health insurance generally includes coverage for residential mental health treatment. Yet, the extent and terms can vary depending on your policy and plan. To navigate Aetna coverage, consider these steps:

  • Review Your Policy: Look over your plan documents for details on residential treatment coverage.
  • Pre-authorization: Check if pre-authorization is required for residential care under your plan.
  • Provider Network: Confirm if the facility is part of Aetna’s approved network to ensure maximum coverage benefits.
  • Deductibles and Copayments: Understand your out-of-pocket costs, even when covered by Aetna.
  • Contact Aetna Directly: Contact Aetna for precise coverage information and any necessary pre-authorization.
  • Cornerstone’s Verification Service: Our team can verify your benefits with Aetna to delineate your coverage for residential treatment.

Remember, insurance plans are mandated by the Affordable Care Act to cover behavioral health and substance abuse services comparably to physical health services, though specifics may vary.3

How long will Aetna cover a stay in residential treatment?

The coverage duration by Aetna depends on:

  • Your plan’s coverage level and terms.
  • Medical necessity as assessed by your healthcare provider.
  • Continuous progress evaluations during treatment.
  • Any specified limits by Aetna on the length of stay or type of program.

Our treatment team is expert in ensuring that you receive the treatment you need, and we will advocate for your treatment every step of the way to ensure that what you need is covered.

How soon can I get into a residential treatment facility?

The timeline for starting residential treatment under Aetna may vary based on:

  • Insurance benefits verification and coverage confirmation.
  • Pre-authorization or referral requirements as per your plan.
  • Availability at the chosen mental health center.
  • Any waiting periods outlined in your policy.

For an accurate admission timeline, contact our admissions team so that we can give you an estimation depending on bed availability and any insurance paperwork requirements that are needed before admission.
