Understanding Heroin Addiction

Heroin addiction, clinically referred to as Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) when it involves heroin, is a chronic condition marked by the compulsive use of heroin despite negative impacts on one’s life. Heroin, a highly addictive and illegal opioid, produces intense euphoria and pain relief, making it particularly hard to quit.

According to the DSM-5, OUD is diagnosed when there is a pattern of problematic opioid use that causes significant distress or impairment. Key symptoms include using larger amounts than intended, unsuccessful attempts to cut down, spending excessive time obtaining and using heroin, intense cravings, neglecting major responsibilities, continuing use despite consequences, as well as signs of tolerance and withdrawal.

More About Nate

What is heroin?

Heroin, also known as diacetylmorphine, is a powerful opioid derived from morphine, extracted from the opium poppy plant. It typically appears as a white or brown powder or a black, sticky substance called “black tar heroin.” While it produces intense euphoria, heroin use carries severe health risks, including high addiction potential, overdose, and physical and psychological dependence.

Heroin addiction often begins with prescription opioids. People may develop a tolerance to their medication, leading them to seek stronger effects. Heroin, which binds quickly to brain receptors and produces intense euphoria, is often cheaper and easier to obtain. Over time, this use becomes compulsive, as the brain adapts and dependence develops.

Heroin’s short-term effects include euphoria, dry mouth, warm flushing of the skin, heavy limbs, itching, nausea, drowsiness, clouded thinking, and slowed breathing. Users may “nod off,” shifting between wakefulness and drowsiness. These effects can be dangerous and highlight the importance of considering heroin addiction treatment early.

Long-term heroin use can lead to serious health issues, including collapsed veins, heart infections, abscesses, liver and kidney disease, lung complications, and mental health problems like depression. Increased tolerance can lead to higher doses and greater overdose risks. Recognizing these effects underscores the need for comprehensive treatment for heroin addiction.
